Virtual Reality in Healthcare

Virtual reality is becoming a huge part of healthcare as this awesome technology is now being incorporated into the medical world. Virtual reality, also known as VR or Augmented reality, is a new and modern technology that helps to simulate a scenario or situation using a computer-generated environment (CGI), usually in a 3D model. VR allows to experience a duplicate of a scenario and allows users to learn and practice as the actual situation is happening. VR has a lot of potential applications, especially in the healthcare industry.

The VR market for healthcare had a value of over 568.7 million in 2016 and is estimated to be worth over 4 billion dollars in 2021. This is due to the rapid growth and adoption of VR technology in the industry and to its many application to different areas. From medical training to patient treatment, its usefulness cannot be undermined.

Some of the fields of healthcare where Virtual Reality plays a useful role are:

  • Training of Medical Personnel

Virtual reality and augmented reality are now applied in the medical training of healthcare practitioners as well as surgeons. Medical training is no longer just about memorization of terms and definitions, but it now deals majorly with practicality thanks to the adoption of VR.

In this context, VR is used to simulate an environment in an operating room, allowing trainees to understand the feeling of the live experience. Allowing for a vivid image to be replicated, VR is used to simulate the human body and its interiors, while showing its different layers and including veins and arteries. Through this, there is an increase in trainees’ experience and accurate knowledge.

  • Treatment of Patients

Aside from being used in the training of medical personnel like doctors and surgeons, Virtual Reality is also used in the field for the treatment of patients. It is used as practice for surgeons before a complex operation to assess risks and understand the procedure properly. The data from the simulation is compiled by other machines like MRI and CT scans and recorded on the VR. During this surgery, the data helps with the use of surgical robots to make precise incisions and even camera positioning.

It is also used by HCPs to treat and understand mental health patients. In cases PTSD and acrophobia, it helps patients get well quicker and it is frequent in fitness training and addiction treatment.

  • Marketing in Healthcare

The marketing scene in healthcare is changing in so many ways unlike previously and VR is being used to enhance these changes. It allows doctors and companies to share their products with patients easily through effective communication and it is highly used in conferences and meetings, which were previously said to be boring. Through this technical advancement, healthcare marketing is now easier and more engaging.

Virtual and augmented reality is a technology that has so much potential for the implementation of change in the healthcare industry. Thankfully healthcare companies are making huge investments in the technological sector of the industry hence there is so much left to achieve through Virtual Reality in Healthcare.
